Why Choose Organic

Why choose organic? What reasons would you have for going organic?  Is it because you want to be healthy; suffer allergies to specific foods or because you want a greener environment to pass on to future generations?  What motivates us to go organic?  Lets look at the facts and dispel some of the myths of going organic

Firstly, one of the main reasons why many are going organic is because of increased awareness of what actually goes into the food we eat. Much of what we are learning about the processed and chemical-laden food sources we have on offer in many shopping complexes; is ringing alarm bells for our general health and well-being. Also the information which is now readily available to us through the media, the internet, magazines and books, is helping us make more informed choices.

Many people are protesting about the additives found in processed foods and it is becoming more evident as the purchases of healthy alternatives is becoming more common-place than a decade ago.  With organically certified products, we can rest assured that they have gone through stringent tests to be certified as organic. For those who choose to grow organic vegetables, it has often been motivated by a concern for the environment, for health reasons, or both. There are increasing numbers of children who are suffering food allergies and many believe this is a direct result of the ever-increasing use of pesticides on our food sources.  There also seems to be a shift in using non-harmful chemical free cleaning products to protect the family as well as the environment.   It is interesting that when the choice is made to go organic, there are many reported instances of allergies and general health improving.

When we decide to grow organic vegetables; one of the first tasks we will engage in, is improving the soil.  This is a definite plus for the environment and often has the added advantage of decreasing our water consumption, as we decide on only organic for our gardening venture. The taste of organic food is definitely a plus.  There is an amazing difference between food that is grown organically; and that which is loaded with pesticides.  In fact, so concerned are many organic farmers, that they have done extensive trials and even taken the step to preserve heirloom varieties of both fruit and vegetables that were being lost to the populace.

There is a definite plus for the local environment and eco-systems and on a larger scale; organic farmers will rotate their crops and be well-informed about not only improving their soil, but also the surrounding environment in the area in which they live and work.  This helpful information is often shared at farm open days and through published books written by those who see the importance of passing on their knowledge to future generations. The other cost effective alternative is growing your own organic produce.  With a plethora of information on offer; this is becoming a popular choice; whether it be on a big block or a small space for container gardening on the balcony.  This is well worth exploring and can be lots of fun.

The argument that organic food is too expensive for many on tight budgets is not holding up. With an increasing number of farmers’ markets and organic foods now more readily available; some are revising their arguments on organic produce being too costly. For many, a healthy lifestyle far outweighs other considerations. It’s for you to make your own well-informed decision on this and as you browse this site, hopefully you will become better informed with the resources available.  Be healthy and enjoy life.
