  Organic Gardening

Organic gardening is becoming more popular as we becoming increasingly aware of the need for a healthier lifestyle.  If you decide to stop using chemicals and go with organic gardening, there will be lots of benefits - healthier plants, fewer problems with pests and diseases, not to mention less money spent on fertilisers and pesticides. In the simplest way, organic gardening means using only vegetable or animal fertilizers, without any synthetics. Also, pest control is performed in eco-friendly ways, using organic substances and useful insects. There are challenges when first starting an eco-friendly garden, but it will certainly be a rewarding experience.

The soil is the most important element in organic gardening, being the place where everything begins to grow. A top soil in balance has a pH between 5.5 and 7.5 and this is for non-acid loving plants. Increased drainage and enough moisture retention of the land stop erosion and the loss of nutrients. To increase the quality of the soil, people make their own compost with the things they usually throw out - peels of vegetables and fruit, crushed shells of eggs, ripped grass, leaves, small pieces of paper, but not rests of meat, cheese, or fish. Also, people make leaf mould in the autumn, using only the brown leaves that look dead, excepting the evergreen leaves from the conifers. This will become a dark brown material, being a very good soil improver and lawn conditioner. The process of building and improving the health of the soil goes on continuously.

The benefits of organic gardening are numerous, both for our health and the environment we live in. Organic food not only tastes better but the quality of the nutrients and essential vitamins is higher; plus, it represents a way of reducing the ingestion of chemicals. This aspect is extremely important, as our bodies are helped in the fight against terminal diseases like cancer, the immunity being kept at a high level. Also, gardening is excellent exercise that is both beneficial to our health and a productive enjoyable past-time. When people plant seeds and watch the seedlings grow to adulthood, they can experience a sense of achievement in a relaxed environment. Such effects can raise the general quality of life for many people.

The use of pesticides presents alarming consequences - millions of birds are killed each year because of the ingestion of these chemicals and populations of honeybees have decreased. Organic gardening provides important benefits to the environment with positive results for us. By not using harmful chemicals, we help remove the high risk of poisoning the air, fresh water, underground water, oceans and the soil.  In this way, terrestrial and marine wild life are also protected. Introducing useful insects into gardening, you help the control of pest populations on a long-term basis. There are ways to keep them away, if you know a little bit about their natural aversion - for example, ants really dislike cucumber piles. This is done without harm to the environment.

These are just some of the reasons why organic gardening has becoming increasingly popular. More and more people are making healthy choices. This in turn will have a positive affect on the environment and give hope to future generations. In the end, organic gardening is a choice that some of us will choose to make.
