Organic No-Dig Gardening

What do you do when you want to plant organic vegetables and herbs in your garden but the soil is not productive? In this case, you have to find solutions to your problem. One possibility is represented by organic no-dig gardening. This is an easy method of building your own garden with eco-friendly materials and it can be created on almost every surface; from the barren, rocky or clayey soil to lawns and concrete. In a simple way, a no-dig garden is a garden situated above the ground.

Before you can start to work on your organic no-dig gardening, you must choose a plot, keeping in mind that it will require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day. After you carefully selected the place for your future garden, be sure to mark out the area with something sustainable with the height of at least 30 cm. This will hold the organic soil in place; which is indeed extremely important. Different layers of organic materials will be placed, the first being represented by a thick layer formed by newspapers or non-waxed cardboard. If you want to maintain the quality of your organic growing, then you should consider using newspapers that have a reduced amount of ink. This layer will stop weeds from reaching to the surface.

A tip for clay soil under the no-dig garden is to sprinkle gypsum for better drainage. After you water the first layer, spread a layer of organic compost, a layer of straw (which is rich in carbon), a layer of aged cow manure (which will provide nitrogen to the plants) and then repeat until you manage to fill the whole patch, adding lots of water. You will finish with a thick layer of organic compost, then be able to plant your seeds or seedlings. The good news is that you can build more than one area of organic no-dig gardening. You can take advantage of crop rotation, thus protecting your vegetables from pests and diseases. Worms will show up in a natural way, helping the soil to be aerated and that’s why no-dig is necessary.

Organic no-dig gardening is really popular in Australia as the soil suffers from deficiency of nutrients. More and more people are becoming conscious of the nutritional aspects that food poses and the implications regarding their health. They look for different solutions to their problems and one option implicates creating an organic no-dig garden. It is simple to build one and it's really simple to maintain it, especially with the worms that do all the hard work for you. You can grow almost every plant you need, dwarf species of vegetables being available for small spaces. This means that you can create a little organic container garden even in your own apartment.

Regardless of the soil condition of your garden, you can still have fresh organic vegetables growing if you really want to. All you need is a sunny spot with a flat surface and a little will. Organic no-dig gardening can help you build a beautiful garden; the number of choices for its size and shape being limited only by your own imagination. If you currently live in a rented property and you believe this to be a reason for holding you back; keep in mind that you can take it with you when you move out to a different location. So, why not start organic no-dig gardening and start growing!
